NINE

Wade stays confined to his room. He’s in a dark place mentally and refuses to see or speak to anyone. He doesn’t eat, and he won’t talk. His mind is consumed with his past and thanks to Luke his barren future.

Before Simone, there was no comfort for him on these dark days. He misses her touch and the way she’d wrap her arms around him and gift him with gentle kisses on the side of his face. She never pressured him. She was just there. He closes his eyes.

“What happened?” Simone asks. She stands in front of him in a yellow dress as he sits on the edge of the bed.

“Simone, baby.” He holds her in his arms and buries his head in her stomach.

“Why are you so sad?” she asks.

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Don’t you love me?” She sits next to him.

“Of course I do.”

“I thought I could make you happy,” she says.

“You do, you’re the only one.”

“You can’t stay here,” she says.

“I’m trying to get home to you,” Wade says.

“No, you can’t stay here.”

“I don’t want to. These people think I’m their king. They’re insane.

“I always knew there was something special about you.”

“I just want to come home to you. I’ll be there soon. I promise. I’m going to get out of here.”

“You misunderstand me. Here is wherever or whatever holds you captive. There is a war for your mind. It suffocates you everywhere you turn. That’s what you have to let go.”

“Yeah,” Wade says.

Simone wraps her arms around Wade’s neck and gifts him with gentle kisses causing Wade to smile.

“Hey, if you’re the king, wouldn’t that make me a queen?”

“I always knew there was something special about you,” Wade says.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

They sit holding hands with their heads touching until Wade opens his eyes.

He darts up and looks around the room. He looks at the edge of the bed. “It was a dream,” he says to himself. “It’s time to leave here.”

Wade gets dressed and finds his way to the room with the red door. He eats alone at the table and finds his way to the library where Michael sits reading.

“What are you doing?” Wade asks.

“It’s about time you came out of your room.”

“You know you don’t have to stay here right? Why are you still here?”

“I’m not going to just leave you behind. I can’t go back and tell Simone I lost her mate.”

“You don’t owe me anything.”

“I know, Michael says. “What did Luke say to you?” he asks Wade.

“Not much. He told me about my father. He showed me where he was buried.”

“That must’ve been tough.”

“Yep.”

“Great talk,” Michael says.

Wade lets out a chuckle.

“How do you feel?” Michael asks.

“I don’t feel anything.”

“You have to feel something. You found out you’re a king.”

“Don’t tell me you believe this bullshit. I’m not a king. I’ve never heard anything so ridiculous.”

“If you have questions you can ask Luke,” Michael says.

“I’m tired of people wasting my time. I need to get home to Simone. That’s all I’m worried about.
